RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
